Do I need the WhatsApp green tick?
No. The green badge and the verification you need to operate are two separate things, and people conflate them constantly. Business verification is what lets you send at all, and you do need that. The badge is a separate application judged on whether your business is notable enough to be worth confirming, and plenty of perfectly good companies never get it.

Two different things with similar names
Business verification is administrative. Meta confirms your company exists using documents, and that is what unlocks sending on the platform properly. Everyone running a business account goes through it. It is paperwork, not a judgement.
The green badge is a judgement. It is applied for separately and the question being asked is whether your business is notable, which in practice leans on whether the outside world writes about you. Press coverage, not paperwork.
So the badge is not a level you unlock by growing your account, and it is not something a vendor can sell you. Anybody promising it for a fee is selling you an application they cannot decide the outcome of.
What actually makes customers trust the chat
The badge is not what people are looking at, mostly because most of them have never noticed it.
What they notice is your business name showing instead of a bare number, a profile photo that matches your sign, an address and opening hours that are filled in, and a reply that arrives quickly. All of that is available without a badge and all of it is in your control today.
The single biggest trust signal on WhatsApp is a fast, sensible answer. That is worth more than any icon.
If you still want it
Get verified as a business first, because that is required regardless. Fill your profile in properly. Then apply, and be prepared for it to be declined without much explanation, which is normal and not a reflection of your business.
In the meantime nothing is blocked. You can run an assistant, send templates, take bookings and answer at 3am with no badge at all.
What the badge does not protect you from
A badge does not stop somebody setting up an account using your business name and photograph, which happens here and is a nuisance to resolve.
What actually helps is being easy to verify by other means. The same number on your website, your Instagram and your Google listing, so a customer checking has three places that agree with each other.
If somebody is impersonating you, report it and tell your customers on the channels you do control. Waiting for a badge to solve it is waiting for something that was never going to.
